To be honest, I cannot put to words my enthusiasm and eagerness to work within a family setting from a different perspective. I wanted to personally share to you a quote, “The fact is, there is no foundation, no secure ground, upon which people may stand today if it isn’t the family. If you don’t have the support and love and caring and concern that you get from a family, you don’t have much at all.” – Mitch Albom. I stand by this quote because I, myself, am part of a family and who else can give a better “Care” than a family. I am currently working for a female older adult for almost 4 years. However, I decided that it is time for me to move forward and so does she. My client is a stroke survivor. I helped her decrease her incontinence issues over the years of my stay with her. For the 3 years of working with her, my contract responsibilities include housekeeping, cooking, keeping her company, and most importantly assisting with ADL. I am however willing to work beyond those parameters. For example, I am contracted to work for only 12 hours a day for 6 days a week; although, I also stay in and overnight. Whenever, she needed help in the middle of the night, such as washroom breaks, I do not hesitate to go and meet my client’s needs. Another example, she gets Personal Support Workers (PSW) from CCAC/ Acclaim Health of Oakville to help her with other ADL that she and her family think would need assistance from a more experienced professional. But, there are inevitable circumstances that should happen such as cancelling appointments from a PSW. Whenever these times happen, I, myself, put initiative and continued competence and assume the role of the PSW and meet the needs of my client. As of now, I am trying to move forward and looking more for personal growth and experience by looking at a different environment of the career.
