I would like to do respite daytime care at my house for maybe 2-4 hours a day a few days a week. This would be for anyone who may need periodic relief as a caregiver so they can run errands or get a break for a few hours while their loved one stays with me for a few hours. I have a handicap ramp and I’d like to make use of the accessibility to the house along with my health training to help out others for a nominal fee. When I was taking care of my mother (stroke and paralysis), I was thinking how I wished I would have known a trustworthy person that could give me a break periodically. Many people care for loved ones and do have the ability to transport their loved one if only there was someone they could leave them with for awhile that would be trustworthy/trained. I don’t think there is much of that available as yet. We do have a senior center in Stevens Point that offers something like that (for a fee), but the disadvantage is they have different staff circulating in and out so there is no continuity/guarantee of the same person caring for your family member. From my own experience, I found that continuity can be a critical factor when caring for someone. Once you get to know a person and their needs well, it can make a big difference in their care versus someone being cared for by so many different people who really don’t know the person well.
