From the Rat Race to Civic Compassion: What led a career businessman from corporate America into home healthcare. A year is a strange thing in business. At the start of 2015, I was a Store Manager at Firestone in Warwick, RI, overseeing a team processing an average of $3 million a year in sales. It seemed to me to a career position; the place I would find myself upon the eve of retirement. But a year is indeed a strange thing in business, and 12 months later I find myself in a position I never imagined in January 2015; the proud and humble owner of a Home Helpers franchise. It was not an easy decision, nor was it one that I undertook without rigorous research, but even today, as I write this post fully immersed in the ebb and flow of a fledgling enterprise, I still find myself slightly in shock. Firestone had been my home, and my team had been my family. We enjoyed an enviable camaraderie, and together we motivated ourselves as a single unit towards a common goal. Yet, for all the energy, success and solidarity, I found my greatest reward was seeing my customers smile. This sense of achievement superseded all others, and when I discovered the world of home healthcare franchises on a warm evening last July, I knew my world was about to change forever. The welfare of the human race has been a prime concern of mine for as long as I can remember, and in situations of compassion, selflessness must always come before selfishness. When I discovered that there was a way to invest my professional energies – of which I have a seemingly unlimited supply – in helping others, I simply had to make the switch. But my journey has just begun. It is an exciting time, the start of a brave new year. …I cannot wait to report back on this post at the start of 2017.
