Hello my name is Mary Margaret but have been called Peggy since birth. I am a 58 year old single female the oldest of 6 girls. I have a 84 year old father who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and he was diagnosed 8 years ago. I have cared for him everyday but now have other care in place. When he was still in the phase of the disease where he could still understand analogies I would explain to him that although his memory was failing there is one way to handle it. Yesterday is gone and forgotten, tomorrow is unknown so the only thing that matters is here and now so we can liive in the moment. Although this disease along with many others that are similar to it are not so cut and dry it did help us to laugh and enjoy every minute of every day. Although this thought process did help with day to day life there are many important issues to consider. The most important aspect I feel of a caregiver is trust. Not only by family members but equally important to the patient. Compassion and understanding of what the patient lives with every day is also vital to their comfort and happiness As a caregiver I feel I can provide all of these. Although I have a long medical employment history I do not have a medical degree. I care for everyone as I would want my family member to be cared for and put myself in the patient's position.
