I was introduced to this rewarding career as a Personal Care Assistant in 2008. A friend of mine at our local church needed someone to help provide care for her friend on the weekends. She introduced me to her client's husband. He agreed I was a good match for his wife and so my friend trained me in the care of his wife. Eventually I was hired full time as his wife's personal care assistant. I arrived at their house early morning to give her a morning shower, get her dressed for the day, then get her situated in her comfy chair, while I went in the kitchen to prepare breakfast for the three of us. I also made sure she took her morning medications. After breakfast I helped her to the bathroom and assisted with toileting to walk her back to her comfy chair again. While she watched TV or took a little nap I cleaned up the dishes and did some laundry. A little while later I took her blood pressure and noted it, then we did a few exercises together. She was a little reluctant about exercising sometimes but eventually I was able to make her feel good about exercising. Then we all went back to the kitchen for lunch. I cleaned up and took her for another bathroom trip. We would then sit on the porch for a little while or maybe walk up and down driveway as she couldn't walk very far. Sometimes I would read a story out loud for her. She really enjoyed the stories. After awhile she got sleepy and we went back inside so she could nap in her comfy chair. Before we knew it was dinnertime. I was back in the kitchen to prepare another meal to eat. After dinner it was back to the bathroom and to the comfy chair to watch a little TV, then back to bathroom to assist her in getting ready for a good night sleep. I found this type of work quite rewarding. She appreciated me being there to help her with her everyday needs. Going to the beauty saloon was her favorite outing. She felt so beautiful after her hair was washed and set. My first lovely lady is gone now but I have continued on helping other lovely people. I really enjoy helping the elderly live in the comfort of their homes while they live out the rest of their lives. I know home is the best place to be. no matter what the circumstance, but truly there is no other place to be while living out end of life. I have worked in an assisted living facility. Rather patients have dementia, Alzheimer's, sugar diabetes, Bipolar issues, or mental clarity. most of the patients know they are not at home, which leads to low self-esteem, loneliness, and restlessness. So I have continued to provide in-home personal care. Some of the services I provide are: meal planning and preparation, kitchen clean-up, keeping a shopping list and trash take-out. Hygiene; to include: showers, hair wash and brush or set, brushing teeth or false teeth, toileting or adult underwear and dressing, filing nails or polishing nails. I do laundry and change sheets. I run errands and grocery shop. I transport to outings or visit relatives. I transfer from bed to wheelchair, from wheelchair to shower or toilet, or from wheelchair to front car seat, etc. I do doctor visits, check blood pressure, diabetes reading and note. I can order medications and follow doctors orders. For companionship I watch TV, read a book to you, play cards, do puzzles, plant or pick flowers, or go for a walk with you. I'll even take your dog for a walk. I also vacuum, dust and clean bathrooms. I have been a Personal Care Assistant for a majority of Alzheimer's clients. I always strive to be a cheerful companion and keep you comfortable as possible in your home environment because I know home is the best place to be.
