I met Marcia B when she was hired as a Home Health Care Aid by my friend Jim, who was recovering from cancer and heart disease. Maria and I were both designated as my friend's Health Care Proxies and I got to know her well. She brings good cheer and positive energy wherever she goes. She knows how to raise the spirits of her ailing clients whether it's cooking them a healthy meal, reading them a book or encouraging them to do the physical therapy or exercise that will help them to regain strength and restore their health. My friend was diagnosed with melanoma, prostate cancer and heart disease and it seemed as if his death was imminent. However, Marcia's skillful care taking, along with the love that she brings to all her clients helped my friend to heal and added an additional three or four years to his life. I remember that Jim had a nasty, gaping bed sore on his back from lying in hospital beds for weeks at a time. The doctors were very concerned that the wound would become infected and eventually kill Jim because of his weakened state. Marcia tended to that wound several times a day, day after day until finally, slowly but surely, it scabbed over and healed. In the final months of Jim's life, Marcia cared for him as if he were a member of her own family. Jim had no one, no family, and Marcia would sleep overnight at the hospital to give him the moral and emotional support he needed. Home Health Care Aids like Marcia B. are rare and hard to come by. She brings a tremendous level of love, compassion and care that sets her apart and makes her the outstanding Home Health Care Professional that she is. With Marcia's help we were able to have our mother at home as long as possible. We had tried many aides over the years and felt that we were always searching to replace them shortly after they came in until we found Marcia. Marcia was very gentle, yet thorough in attending to all of my mother's needs and in doing so she always treated my mother with respect and dignity. Marcia administered medication on a schedule and diligently assisted with my mother's physical therapy exercises during the week.
