Elder Care in New York, New York

My name is James Freed. I’m a retired professor from UCLA School of Dentistry and live in California. I know Jeannie Filippini as a result of my employing her from late 2014 until March, 2017. Her role during that time was to provide assistance to my brother in New York who was suffering from progressive dementia. Jeani was initially employed for several hours a day, five days a week when my brother was living in an apartment on West 72nd Street. She performed a number of functions including preparing meals, taking him shopping, maintaining his apartment, accompanying him on walks and providing companionship. In 2015 he moved to an independent living facility (The Esplanade) on West End Avenue. At that location she would visit him for 2-3 hours, five days a week. She continued all the previous functions with the exception of preparing meals. In addition, she monitored his ability to function in this environment, identified health issues that needed to be brought to my attention and reported to me on the performance of staff who were employed to help my brother with certain activities of daily living. In short, Jeani fulfilled everything she was asked to do superbly. It is not just that she is competent. I think the most important things are that she is a truly warm and caring person and that she is smart. I felt as though she was a member of our family who cared for my brother like a caring family member would. She alerted me on numerous occasions when some medical issue needed attention or when aides were not performing the duties for which they were hired, including issues such as hygiene and safety. In March, 2017, I brought my brother to California to be in an assisted-living facility. This has worked reasonably well with the exception that I have not been able to find anyone as loving, caring, honest and smart as Jeani to help with my brother. I think the reason for that is there are very few people like her. I enthusiastically recommend Jeani Fillipini without reservation and envy anyone who has the opportunity to employ her. Jeani worked with two of my elderly clients over several years. The first, S., lived in a senior apartment building and Jeani visited him regularly to take him out for walks and to doctor and other appointments. She was also the main point of contact with the aides and was truly excellent at supervising them, especially as the supervising nurses changed almost every month. She did such a terrific job there that I recommended her for a weekend companion position with another elderly gentleman, R. Jeani is an excellent companion. She is very personable, with lots of interests, and good at keeping her elderly charges engaged. She was very popular with all the staff at the senior apartment building as she took the time to get to know them and make sure they looked out for S. She was also a very good communicator with me – always letting me know if there was an issue or when something needed to be purchased, making sure they looked their best (keeping their hair cut, taking clothes to the cleaner, etc.). She is also totally honest, accounting for all the cash expenditures by leaving me receipts or notes.
