Providing compassionate care to those who need a friend with them. I have worked with those struggling with Alzheimer's - from onset, until the end. And there will always be a special place in my heart for folks dealing with that. I purposefully chose night shift so that I knew - if they woke up at night and couldn't go back to sleep, or were afraid, or wanted to talk and have a snack at 2 am - they wouldn't be rushed or forced back to bed. If they lie awake in bed, I sing to them. Going by conversations I've had, I've played basketball at St. Joseph's Catholic High School, raised cows on a farm and planned an escape to Mexico ;) Older folks, regardless of their health issues, have wonderful stories to tell, and sometimes, wild and adventurous plans to make. And I'm here to listen. When she couldn't drink, I'd give her drops of water in a straw. When he couldn't remember the bathroom was on the other side of the room, I'd cleaned up and laugh with him while we changed his clothes. When she didn't like people to get her dressed and would become combative, I'd let her pick out her outfit and "get dressed" on her own. When he couldn't get out of bed anymore, we would just sit together. And when she was longer longer in pain, I cleaned her up one last time and put her pretty nightgown on her. Then we waited for them to take her to the funeral home. They are precious, and I remember them all. If you need more than just a "sitter", reach out. I'd love to hear from you!
