Elder Care in New Rochelle, New York

My interest in and senior care experience is on international policy-making level while working at the UN where I represented the African Group and endorsed the Group’s position in advocating for the establishment of an international binding instrument on the human rights and protection of elder persons. In addition to this, my brothers and I collaborated in the care of our elderly parents, who sadly transitioned into eternity on July 23 and September 2, 2015. This took place after close to four years of our collaborated effort in ensuring that our parents led a dignified, compassionate and loving life through among others the management of their health-care needs and good nutrition intake of foods and correct and timely medicine regiment. Previous to this, in the three months leading to her death from a massive heart attack, I was selected by my Mum to be the de-facto caregiver for my maternal Grandmother; this was following my university career. While I never received certification for this first experience of caring for an elderly person, I became acutely aware of the needs, expectations and limitations faced by elderly persons. Five years after her passing, my paternal Grandmother came to live with my parents; while I was not longer living with my parents, my insight with my other Grandmother enhanced the care that was provided for her. I coached and tutored hired help in understanding the intricacy of care for elder persons; for example training them to stop talking about them as if they are not there or addressing them in the third person.
