If you have experienced having to care for an elderly loved one finding the right caregiver can sometimes feel like an impossible task. Agency's promise you everything you should expect, but never deliver. They charge a high hourly wage then pay a small fraction to the actual person giving the care. Resulting in sub-standard quality of help. A basic need for the elderly is a feeling of security, trust and familiarity with their caregiver. Three most irreplaceable qualities....and ones an agency simply can not provide. Agencies make their money by convincing you they can find the perfect person. They rarely do. A good qualified caregiver should actively interact with the client in every and any way. A great caregiver does this naturally because they love the job and love to nurture. The agency caregivers are given a few days or weeks of speed "training" and if they do the job right the work is a lot more difficult than they expected for the small hourly wage they receive from the agency. So they usually depart shortly thereafter resulting in a new caregiver being assigned and a new person to introduce to your loved one. The reality is while the agency charges anywhere from $30 to $60 an hour the actual caregiver is receiving close to minimum wage which is why they experience high turnover and poor quality help. I worked at the Melrose retirement home in Harwichport, MA where I assisted those living in the elderly community.
