To Hiring Committee I am a driven Social Services Worker offering more than 10 years of relevant experience in front-line intake and one on one work with at risk populations. I am seeking to forge the foundations of a life-long career at a position that both challenges me and helps me grow, offering the opportunity to commit myself to truly meaningful work. It is with this in mind that I am submitting my application for this position ; I believe that I will be a great asset. My devotion to social work and advocacy work is directly connected to my own experiences arriving in Canada from Afghanistan as a youth. Having lived through the social marginalization and anxiety of building a new life in a strange and far off land, I grew up with the intention of alleviating that social pressure for others and sharing the broad skill set and resources that I’ve developed over the years. Upon finishing high school, I began working on building a life-long career. I have developed a strong base at George Brown College Earning a diploma in Social Service Work and had my Placement as a front line worker In Red Door Shelter for Abused Women and Children. I have had the opportunity to support survivors through the court tribunal process in a sexual harassment case. I also acted as an advocate for clients dealing with cultural barriers in the face of government officials and institutions in order to secure official government documents and receive access to government assistance programs. Working at Red Door Shelter has given me the opportunity to learn a lot about Women’s oppression and at the same time made me question social injustices and gender base violence which I was looking for an answer and it encouraged me to apply for Gender and women's studies at York University. Taking gender and women's studies and York University along a Certificate in Refugee and Migration Studies, and my experience working in shelter with abuse women and children has given me the ability to provide non-judgmental support; I also learned to have a survivor-centric lens. This means that I understand that every survivor is coming from a different background, understanding, and experience. I gain valuable knowledge about the roots of oppression and gender violence in our society at York University. I put this at the forefront of my work when supporting survivors because every individual has specific needs; every individual needs support in a different way. Being exposed to such an environment has given me a great sense of responsibility and compassion and empathy. I have a passion for social justice and the fight for equity. I have been a long time member of LGBTQ, the Ontario Public Interest Research Group at York University as well as the Sexual Assault Support Line where I provided anti-oppression training for individuals who need support. I work to build connections between other groups and clubs on campus to raise awareness about violence against women. I facilitate workshops and presentations regularly regarding healthy relationships, consent, rape culture, and domestic abuse; I have had the opportunity to support survivors through the University tribunal process in a sexual harassment case. Working at SASSL has given me the opportunity to do what I love most: support and empower women. I have had experience working with afghan women's organization and afghan association of Ontario. My roles during working in these tow organization I coordinated events and workshops for new comers Youth who had trouble adjusting to new law, policies and life style in Canada. I demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation pertaining to the application process for housing, welfare, employment, mental health resources for new comers and at risk populations and permanent residency. Working at the afghan women's organization was a great experience. It gave me the opportunity to experience working with new immigrants, taking them to different government agencies not only as an interpreter but also providing them with moral support in stressful situations and advocate on their behalf when it was needed. Furthermore, I am very familiar with computers and the use of Microsoft office programs such as Microsoft word, Power point and Excel. I am an outgoing and confident person who is able to work both individually and within a group. I often take leadership positions however I know when to step back and let others take the lead. I pay great attention to detail which is an asset to any position. I have worked extensively with marginalized populations which made me to be passionate for social justice since my graduation, I have also worked in a similar capacity at York University, providing students and faculty with sensitive support, and organizing community-based events geared towards strengthening connecting and community among students and community members. I am confident that I possess the full skill set required to excel in this position, and I believe that my cumulative education and experience will distinguish me as a leading candidate at your organization.
