Elder care in Maynard, Massachusetts

Ever since witnessing firsthand the daily challenges my grandfather struggled with while falling victim to dementia and cancer, I've had a powerful passion for helping seniors age in place at home as long as possible. My grandfather was the strongest man I knew, mentally and physically, even when he was in his 80's! Watching dementia and cancer rip your loved one apart is purely devastating. I was young, trying to get my degree at a rigorous university, and facing my own challenges to do my best in school, and when my Pa started to lose the ability to care for himself, I dove head first into being his one and only caregiver. Unfortunately, I was not able to continue pulling the grades needed to stay in that university at the same time, but I never thought twice about it, my Pa needed me. I also became a mom a couple of years into what became his declining years, and sadly his last ones. I watched a man who could do just about anything become unable to do almost anything. My Pa use to tell us story after story, you know the ones that start with, "when I was your age", or "when i was a kid". Those stories I forever love remembering and re-telling. But, watching the man who told you the story of how he built his house (which is now worth over a million dollars!) with his own two hands and how everyone cracked jokes about how they we're worried they'd find him dead outside because he would never stop working whether it was through snow or rain storms, he kept working, nothing stopped him! That house was his pride and joy, his pride in his work building that house ran deep -so deep that he started telling me to bury him in the backyard, which I obviously told him I would. That was my Pa, he called the shots and nobody could tell him what to do, boy was he was stubborn, but strong and kind. No one had to take care of him he took care of them. Neighbors relied on him for almost anything, he was the go to neighbor. Whether it was to mow a lawn, stop by with the snow blower during a good ole new england storm or just lend a tool out, my Pa could and would always help his friends and neighbors. When he became sick enough where I had to take him to the hospital by force, there was nothing that could keep him in that hospital or Nursing Home, I'd get the call almost immediately after pulling away from the hospital from him and he would say to come get him the out of there and to bring him home-to which I always did. All he wanted was to be in his home during those awful years of his life, I felt he deserved it and so I did just that, i kept him home as long as I possibly could.
Although this was one of the worst times in my life, it also brought to life my passion to help seniors that just keeps growing stronger and stronger, I watched my Pa's world get flipped upside down and backwards, I watched him become depressed and almost suicidal because he knew he was losing his mind to dementia, but through it all, through the absolute worst, I knew he was grateful because I was making his wish a reality, to be in his home.
