Tips for Adjusting to a Retirement Home

June 10, 2015

Moving from your own independent home to an assisted living facility or a retirement home is a significant change and can be a stressful time for anyone. Despite the many advantages of independent living, making the decision to move can still be difficult. In addition to adjusting to a new living environment, you'll be meeting new people and perhaps new activities.

These are our tips to help you adjust to this new transition in life.

Decorate your new home.
Although it may be smaller and look different than your long time home, you can still make it feel comfortable and familiar to you. Hang pictures and bring in pieces of furniture you love and will use regularly. Anything to customize the space and make it feel comfortable for you.

Pack well in advance of the move.
Don’t add to the stress of the actual move by putting yourself in a position where you’ll need to make hasty decisions about what to take and what to discard. Pack well in advance and consider giving some of the stuff that won’t be going with you to charity or to friends and family.

Socialize.
Get out and meet your neighbours! This is the best way to make new friendships, maintain a social life, and overall feel more comfortable and connected to your new surroundings.

Stay connected.
Keep in touch with friends and family even though you may be in a new neighbourhood. Although it’s important to make new connections, maintaining old ties will help you feel safe with all of the new changes happening.
