As a Certified Foot Care Nurse (CFCN) and Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWOCN), I have the clinical knowledge and expertise to provide foot and toenail care to patients at the bedside to help minimize the chance of injury and infection. Current demographic trends toward an aging population and associated health issues such as diabetes, arthritis, peripheral arterial disease, dementia, and loss of visual acuity hinder self-care of the feet and toenails. As a CFCN, I will consult on patients with toenails of abnormal length and thickness and provide specialized care to include assessment and education re: maintaining toenails of normal length, promoting skin integrity, and preventing ulceration and injuries. Routine foot and toenail assessment, clinically appropriate care, and patient education are essential for improving foot health.
