Elder Care in Vancouver, British Columbia

I'm an
Individual
I'm here to help other families who are experiencing the same difficulty which I had also experienced when my mother needed care after her brain surgery due to brain stroke and even after her recovery from stroke. As the part-time caregiver of my mom, alternating with her special nurse during that time, I did have difficulties but my natural inclination towards compassion and caring for the elderly was what motivated me to go on with my duty and to do it properly and willingly. I took care of a senior citizen who was a stroke victim and who had medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. I took care of her for seven years from the time she was recovering from her stroke and brain surgery (due to blood clots in her brain) and thereafter. I took care of her when she was completely bed-ridden and recovering. I had to take her blood pressure readings every now and then as her blood pressure then was unstable with frequent shoot ups and all especially at night. I was feeding her with food through a tube that was connected from her nose to her stomach. I was also trained by her nurse to inject regularly the insulin that was prescribed by her internist and to take her blood sugar readings every morning and evening. I saw to it that she took all the prescribed medicines and also her maintenance medicines. In addition to this, I did the following: 1. Kept her body clean at all times and changing her adult diapers when needed. 2. Changed her beddings and linens regularly. 3. Applied special ointment to prevent and treat bed sores. 3. Kept her mood light and pleasant by conversing with her every now and then and also to refresh her memory as she was having difficulty recalling things after her brain surgey. After her recovery period from surgery, I would regularly take her to her physical therapy sessions at a nearby rehab center located in the hospital. I would assist her physical therapist in lifting her up from the wheelchair so that she could stand and try to walk. I would motivate her to undergo the physical therapy sessions as she was having a hard time with this routine. I made sure she ate the right food and in proper proportions as she had difficulty in swallowing food during those times. As she was half-paralyzed (left side), she had difficulty walking and I would always be by her side assisting and sometimes half-carrying her, wenever she wanted to walk outside the house for a few minutes. The period after recovery was the most challenging one for me as she had completely regained her memory but was more prone to depressions and mood swings. Nevertheless, I was able to make her feel normal by giving her the care and attention that she needed that time.
