Elder Care in Madison, Wisconsin

My academic training is as a historian, but I have been fortunate enough to have had years of caregiving experience, starting with my time at Easter Seals Wisconsin. I served for several summers as the male dorm coordinator at Easter Seals Wisconsin Camp Wawbeek, and was responsible for coordinating the care of anywhere from 40 to 100 male campers during each week-long session. Our campers were typically organized by age (including a session exclusively for older adults), and care needs were always as varied as the personalities of those with them. With the exception of a single week offered for those with high-functioning autism, we served a population including both those with visible disabilities and people whose care needs were less physical. As a result, I had the opportunity to gain enormous amounts of practical experience in personal care and behavior management. I was happy to put this experience to use during my time in Scotland, where I served as a support worker for a young man with autism-associated catatonia while completing my Master's degree. Upon arriving in Madison, I completed a CNA course as well as a Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification, hoping to secure work as a caregiver while I research and prepare for my PhD proposal.
