Mental Health Support worker I started here over 3 years ago with no previous experience in the care sector, my main duties and responsibilities were to work with several service users. The majority of work base in domiciliary and care home, nursing home sector. I began working for different men with a variety of mental health and learning issues, including Approved premises (Assist in the supervision of residents, maintaining discipline and the adherence to AP rules, licence conditions and court orders) at different sites throughout Manchester. Some key challenges I faced early on were to understand the nature of their issues, how to communicate effectively with them, and to facilitate their development of social integration skills within the wider community. Often there were high stress incidents including violence shown towards myself and other members of the public that I had to learn to control and minimise whilst remaining calm and reassuring to the service user. I have remained in post with the same 4 men for the last 10 years which has afforded them continuity in care and aided their development and independence within their surroundings, in addition to improved dignity and freedom of choice. In addition to working with these service users, I have also taken on ad hoc work within Children's Services based in Manchester through different Agencies, these service users had a range of mental and learning difficulties to contend with. Working with these various service users has also meant working with their associated specialists. This has included doctors, community psychiatric nurses, advocates, and social workers in order to maintain and update care and sup- port plans for the individuals. I therefore have extensive experience in the administration side of organising and re- porting on not only the individuals daily schedule, but also their medication logs. The upkeep and maintenance of records has been integral to my success as a care worker and vital to the correct handover of them to my counterparts. Most recently, my statement of events has been utilised in the care plan of a high dependency service user. Without accuracy and diligence, I would be unable to perform my duties as well as I do. Working as part of a central care support team has meant that I have had to work closely not just with the service users, but also work effectively and flexibly as part of that team. Without that ability to work so well with 2 my team members, we would not be able to perform as well as we do. The role is based on shift patterns which means I have had to be incredibly flexible in my working hours, Prior to this position, I worked in several construction sites as a supervisor. I also worked Cross transferable skills I took from these roles were customer relations and strong administrative support.
