Elder Care in Toronto, Ontario

I'm an
Individual
My name is Alan Joyce and i'm 26 years of age. I have recently moved to Canada from Ireland hoping to better my career opportunities and to experience a different way of life. Before I left Ireland I worked as a care assistant in a Nursing Home in which I enjoyed tremendously. My duties as a carer were to help the residents with their ADL such as assisting them bathing, oral mouth care, dressing, grooming , assisting with meals and toileting. While i was caring I had to complete certain courses such as Fetec Level 5 for The Care Of The Elderly, Patient manual handling and I also completed other training which benefits me in the work I am seeking for example an up to date CPR training. I have also completed a few Social Care Studies which are done on-line through Hingham Manor, Hingham, UK and these covered Dementia Care, Hand hygiene, infection control, safeguarding of vulnerable adults and many more. I have all certs to show I have completed these courses. You might wonder what got me interested in this type of work? Well before I got into caring I worked as a cleaner in a hospital for four years. I began with offices and wards in which I would have to clean, dust, hoover, wash and polish floors. I then was moved to the Labortorities where full cleaning was needed from top to bottom including walls. They would all need to be thoroughly washed with special disinfectant. I would have been shifted throughout the hospital wherever thorough cleaning was needed, eventually I was sent to theatre where I worked till I left in April of this year. I found the nursing staff very friendly and got on very well with them all and it was them that got me thinking of changing my career. They would always say why not try for a Porter position or a Care assistant within the hospital cause they would tell me I had a natural caring way about me and I get on well with people. At first I didn't think it was for me but I thought long about it and decided to give it a go. I actually applied as a mature student for nursing college this year but has they only have limited spaces I was unsuccessful of securing a place. That's when I decided to try the caring profession for a care assistant. With the help of my mother who works as a carer in a nursing home back home she helped me get into her place of work as a trial to see if I would like it and it was there I completed all my courses I have acheived up to date. I always had it in me to do a bit of travelling so when my friend had mentioned earlier this year about applying for a Canadian working visa I decided I'd go along with her. So i put my heart and soul into doing whatever was needed to have what would help me along in finding the right employment. Here I am two months on and loving it. I havn't found the right employment yet as in the caring side but I am working as a kitchen assistant in a bar. It is good and a great experience but it's not what I really want. I'm hoping by registering with ElderCare that eventually sooner rather then later I will find something more suitable in what i'm looking for. There's not much more I can tell you about myself other then what I did back home and who i've left behind. I completed my leaving cert in 2009 but as I didnt like school very much I just wanted to leave and be done with all schooling. Little did I know then that a college education would have benefited me more now but unfortunately was not to be. Before coming to Canada I lived at home with my mother and three siblings, two brothers and one sister. I'd be second in family with a brother older, a younger brother and the youngest been my sister. I lost my father back in 2003 through Cancer, I was eleven years old. My mother has brought us up on her own since and we never had to do without, no matter how much she may had to struggle but she never once had let on. I admire and respect her 100% and will always be grateful for she helped me along on acheiving my goal on coming here to Canada. I hope this has given you an insight to who I am and what I may be capeable of and hopefully to find emploment so I can show you in person. Hopefully I will be hearing from you in the near future Thanking You Alan Joyce
