I became aware of caring for the elderly at the age of 7 as I occasionally assisted my mom to provide care to my maternal grandmother who came to live with us before she died a few months later. Amazing how that affected my sensitivities toward the seniors of the world. Then 1999 came and my siblings and I began the honorable 5 year task of taking care of our mom who had been diagnosed previously years before with diabetes that eventually required home dialysis 5 times daily by my sisters and me when it was my turn to go home to Nashville and assist (for a couple of weeks) every 4 months throughout the 5 year period. She died in 2004. So care giving is not a unique phenomenon for me, and I learned to lead - with love and compassion. The 96 year old female that I have cared for over that last 2 years would attest to this. Humbled and honored to assist male or female seniors with companionship and non specialized nursing needs.
