Elder Care in Gatineau, Quebec

I'm an
Individual
Hi, I am a mature, caring, calm and respectful 57 year old woman with a lot of free time. My husband is still employed, so I find myself alone during the day and bored. Although I have not been professionally trained with Alzheimer or dementia patients, I have done a lot of reading and research on these diseases. Here is why. When we had to move my father to a long-term facility, the only room available was in this wing. When another patient would wander into my father\'s room, the rest of the family would yell at this patient. What would happen was the patient would then become very agitated and this would upset my father, which wasn\'t very good for his health. So I did research to see if there was a better option. I quickly realized that the best way was to remain calm. The poor Alzheimer patient was only looking for his wife who had passed away. What I would do was when this gentleman entered my father\'s room looking for his wife, was offer him my arm and tell him I would help him look for his wife. Then I would slowly walk him back to his room and notify the nurses. When my father was napping, I would go sit in the common area of the facility and talk to some of the patients. I had cleared this with the staff first. Yes, some days I would hear the same story many times, but the smiles on their faces was worth it. When my father passed away, the staff said that the patients were going to miss me, because a lot of them never had any visitors. They also thanked me for my patience with the people. I told them I was the lucky one, because even though these patients had these afflictions, I really enjoyed my time spent with them. I am currently teaching a senior with a mental disability to sew. A couple of ladies started up a sewing group and this individual joined. The lady giving the classes would get frustrated and just do the projects for this person, so the disabled person wouldn\'t disturb the class. Then the assistant gave it a try, same result, more disruption. So a couple of weeks ago I asked if I could give it a try. I remained calm, used simple instructions, but more importantly I spoke to her with respect and dignity. Gone were the out bursts in class and she just called me this morning and told me she has finished the project. The first in two years of classes! Also, my sewing partner is 93. Nobody wanted to work with her, because of her age. But, I was the lucky one. She is a goddess with a needle and thread. I am learning so much. You will see from my resume that my experience is in the corporate world, but I have a lot of life experience. My interests are sewing, long walks, discussing current events or celebrity gossip, sports and books. I am a cleanaholic and like it when the house is clean and sparkling. I am an honest person and very discreet. I can provide you with excellent references. If you think I am the right person to care for your loved one please contact me. I have cared for my senior parents until they wished to be placed in a facility closer to their home town where their friends were. My father was partially deaf and totally blind. My mother was 90% deaf. I accompanied them to medical appts. and hospital visits. I provided nutritional meals, made sure that the medication was taken properly and on time, helped with bathing, cooking and cleaning, explained health care instructions, etc.
