Having helped my best friend -- in her late 50s--recover at Sunnybrook Hospital two years ago, by just being present in her room, gave me a great sense of doing meaningful volunteer work in the rehabilitation process. When she left hospital, Tina told me that having someone around to have brief conversations, help with little things and handing her the newspaper, and more importantly, requesting help from nurses and other caregivers, was a boon to reducing anxiety and stress.
