Elder Care in Kingston, Ontario

My name is Sherryl French and I would like to tell you a little about myself. I am a career administrator who moved back to the Kingston area to assist with an aging parent. In this Kingston job market, I could not find the type of work that interested me. That is how I found my way to the Smile Program, where I worked for 3 years providing at home assistance to seniors in need. After the majority of my client base moved on to full-time care I left the Smile program and went back to office management for a time.But I loved working with my senior clients and missed it. One of the things I found in senior care is that many had homes that hadn't had a good cleaning in years. (I have found that most cleaning services simply do not do much more than surface clean) On taking on a new client I prefer to meet with an immediate family member also. I like to make a connection with the family; to discuss the clients needs, preferences and to do a good walk through of the home. I am bondable, honest and have an up to date police clearance for this type of work. But I do prefer that the client and family discuss with me openly the state of valuables, how money is exchanged if I am to do shopping and the mental state of the client I would be working with. This comes from experience; there is no worse feeling than having and aging client think you may have taken something that.. maybe never existed or was simply misplaced. There is a huge amount of trust to be given to a caregiver, but that person also only has their word to back them up. So I find the best way to deal with this is to bring it all out in the open upon the first interview. I have even done such a meeting with out of town family via Skype, enabling us all to be in the room at the same time. I have also found that medications/ Dr.'s appointments and the clients physical and mental health should also be discussed with a family member. I have had clients whom upon seeing their meds I have talked their families into getting the client reassessed; as too many times the meds are causing more harm than good. I care about my clients. I enjoy talking to them as I work (if they like). I clean, shop, garden, take them to appointments, assist with basic health care and dietary needs, preparing meals to their liking and dishes that can be reheated. I get along with clients of either gender and have also worked with couples, who well one may just need someone around so they can have a little R & R themselves.
