Elder Care in Toronto, Ontario

I'm an
Individual
Hello! My name is Kate and I am a 25 year old nursing student. Although I am young I have almost 10 years of experience working with individuals of all ages and abilities in a supportive role. I have completed five clinical rotations to date and am currently working in a group home supporting individuals with disabilities in everything from personal care and hygiene to capacity building and community integration. The majority of my professional experience has been working with people with disabilities such as Spina Bifida, Di-Georges syndrome and Down Syndrome (to name a few), however the training I have received in my nursing program has exposed me to people of various ages experiencing a variety of complicated ailments. I myself have experienced the caregiver role while caring for my Nanny during her final months after a long battle with cancer. I believe this experience was fundamental for me as it changed how I provided care to others and enriched my appreciation of the family and their role in the care of someone who is ill or needs support. I am looking for the opportunity to continue my learning over the summer and thereafter. My nursing placements have been in major hospitals but I would like to better understand illness as it exists in the community as I believe this will be important for me to understand moving forward so that I can better prepare my future patients for discharge and ensure a smoother transition back home. My availability is pretty flexible at this point and I am willing to work out a schedule that works best for you and your family. I do not own a car but am proficient in using public transit. Should you have any questions regarding myself, my qualifications, etc. please feel free to contact me. -Kate I cared for my grandmother during the last three months of her battle with cancer. Her care included medication administration, assistance with personal hygiene and dressing as well as transfers. This experience helped me understand the caregivers perspective from a personal standpoint, not just the healthcare providers position. The experience taught me a lot about myself and how to provide compassionate care. I am also a nursing student and have completed five clinical placements to date including geriatrics, women and babies, med/surge, pediatrics and mental health. Please see resume.
