I had the opportunity a year ago to leave the business field and get into care-giving, which has been my desire for many years. My previous experience in caregiving was with my parents – they lived with me for almost 4 years. This gave me the opportunity to see firsthand, the need for in-home caregiving. By remaining at home they were able to continue a quality of life and involvement, that, in a nursing home, they would not have been able to enjoy. My Mom suffered from dementia/ Alzheimers and had diabetes, as well. She also developed a staph infection after a hip replacement, which left her wheelchair bound without a hip. My Dads health issues came on quickly which resulted in a surgery for spinal stenosis, leaving him in a wheelchair and on a feeding tube. I took care of them in every way, including doctor appointments, transferring, mealtimes, medication management, exercises, hygiene and social interactions. It was a great opportunity for me to give back a little of what they gave me in life. Most recently, I unfortunately, had to leave my client who was a wonderful lady that I had been caring for over the last year. Because of a necessary foot surgery and extended recovery, I had to take some time off to heal. My clients’ challenges were also dementia/Alzheimers, diabetes, blood pressure and some mobility issues. Temporary help was not an option because of the length of time I would be out. Any kind of temporary help would have just been more of a stressor for her. I am now ready to return to the field and would love to discuss your needs for your loved one.
