Elder Care in Manhattan, New York

I am a retired Substitute Teacher. I have taken care of the elderly off and on during my life. I presently take care of a dear friend, male of 84 years old. I have been taking care of him for two years. He cannot see well. I clean for him, prepare meals, do his laundry, run errands for him, accompany him to the doctors, administer his medication and give him good conversation as he is an avid reader of intelligent issues and the daily newspaper. I keep abreast of what he reads in order to interact with him and keep his attention. He is going to live with one of his relatives very soon, therefore i can start work immediately. I love people and like to see them smile. I have also taken care of Alzheimer's and Diabetes patients. I play exercise games to stimulate my Alzheimer's patients minds, administer insulin to my Diabetes patients and keep abreast of their blood sugar levels and work to stabilize these levels if necessary. The last Diabetes patient I had actually was after three months of being with me decreased in his insulin dosage which worked very well for him. Getting back to teaching, I was also a permanent teacher for a Kindergarten class at St Nicholas Catholic School in Passaic, NJ, for one year. I was also a permanent teacher for the Paterson Social Re-Entry Program for a year. There I taught juvenile delinquents reading to get their GED. I must say this was a very rewarding teaching assignment as all of our students passed their GED tests and some even went to college. One of my students is actually a genius. I will never forget her.. All she needed was structure, as did most of our students. Our program also gave them part-time employment, which helped give them self esteem; including their studies of course.
